ACORN's Nevada Office Raided By Authorities

Las Vegas, Nevada (AHN) - Nevada state authorities raided a local office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) late Tuesday as part of an investigation into allegations that the non-profit, the nation's largest group for low-income people, had committed voter fraud.

Investigators from the offices of the Secretary of State and the state Attorney General seized eight computer hard drives and about 20 boxes of documents. They are looking into accusations that ACORN had submitted registration forms containing false information and had tried to register voters multiple times.

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller's office said no one was at the ACORN office during the raid and no one was arrested.

"Now we begin the task of sifting through the material that was seized to determine how widespread any fraud might be," Miller said in a statement. "We're giving this the highest priority with the election looming, but until we've had time to thoroughly analyze the material, it would be inappropriate and speculative to suggest how widespread it may be."

ACORN and Project Vote, a voter participation organization, announced earlier that day that "the conclusion of the most successful voter registration drive in history with more than 1.3 million new voters registered in 21 states.

In a statement, ACORN interim Chief Organizer Bertha Lewis called the raid of its Las Vegas office "a stunt that serves no useful purpose other than to discredit our work registering Nevadans and distracting us from the important work ahead of getting every eligible voter to the polls."

Lewis added, "For the past 10 months, any time ACORN has identified a potentially fraudulent application, we turn that application in to election officials separately and offer to provide election officials with the information they would need to pursue an investigation or prosecution of the individual. Election officials routinely ignored this information and failed to act."

Pundits have taken note that the surge in interest among voters, and rise in voter registration, will benefit Democrats in Nevada and other key states. The increase in voter registration among Democrats in the Silver State, according to the Washington Post, exceeds Republicans by a 4 to 1 margin.
